Francis Lucille: Test your theory in the lab of life

On lasting happiness, enlightenment & meditation: dialogue with Bernardo Kastrup

"Okay, you have your theory. Take it to the lab of life. Check it out." - Francis Lucille

In this dialogue, Bernardo asks non-dual teacher Francis Lucille to describe the impact this enquiry has had on his life.

"Do you feel happy, today?" he asks.

"Oh yes," responds Francis. And the more so the older he gets.

Francis then describes what this really means in daily life, how to deal with empathy overload, what it is to truly encounter another human, and what meditation is.

Meditate, Italian style

For Francis, true meditation is simply the enquiry into consciousness. It doesn’t need a fancy robe, a cushion or particular posture. What is needed is enthusiasm and sincerity for the question. Your thoughts can wander as they will, there is no need for discipline. "It's more Italian, you see?"

Test your philosophy in daily life

Francis further contends that you can test this philosophy empirically. Not with objective measures like in physics, but by observing its effects in your life.

"All that needs to be done is to try to live our life from this new perspective, that this apparently ordinary and limited consciousness, which is hearing these words right now, is, in fact, the consciousness of the universe, or is absolute, is cosmic.

And that changes many things in our life. It changes the way we think. It changes the way we perceive the world. It changes the way we interact with others. It changes the way we react to events, unforeseen events in our life. And we don't need to conduct this kind of experiment all the time. We can't in the beginning. But from time to time, we try this new perspective."

We also discussed:

  • How Western philosophy sidelined Eastern and African thought
  • Would a happy materialist gain anything from non-duality?
  • Advaita Vedanta vs Kashmir Shaivism
  • Do we need a tradition or a guru?
  • Do we need to eliminate the subtle sense of "I"?

I look forward to reading any reflections in the comments section, especially any results from testing your philosophy in the lab of life.

Until next week!

Amir

Francis Lucille

Francis Lucille studied mathematics and physics at the École Polytechnique in Paris. After graduating, he worked on missile testing for the French armed forces, but ceased all weapons-related work after discovering the writings of J. Krishnamurti.

That encounter began an intense search into the nature of reality, which found its resolution shortly after meeting Advaita Vedanta teacher Jean Klein in 1975. Francis remained a close student and friend until Klein's death in 1998.

Francis teaches internationally, bringing together the precision of his scientific background with a direct investigation of consciousness and experience. He has also translated works by Eastern and Western sages, including Meister Eckhart, Shankara and Parmenides.
