Dr Christopher Timmermann: DMT & the nature of reality

Christopher Timmermann (Imperial’s DMT Research Group) is one of the world's leading researchers on DMT and 5-MeO-DMT. These are amongst the most powerful psychedelics we know. DMT is famous for catapulting people into hyper-real alternate worlds populated by seemingly autonomous beings.

5-MeO-DMT evokes experiences of “pure consciousness” featuring a complete loss of ego, self and time.

For anyone interested in the nature of reality and mind, these experiences deserve consideration.

Christopher presents his work on human neuroimaging studies on DMT, mapping what happens in the brain in these "more real than real” spaces. His latest work includes a study with a meditation lama comparing advanced meditation and psychedelic states.

He discusses with Bernardo his influential research showing that psychedelic experiences can shift people’s most basic metaphysical beliefs away from hard physicalism.

In turn, Bernardo presents his philosophy and how he interprets psychedelic experiences such as the ones Christopher researches.

We're also delighted to offer you a 20% discount to Unlocking The Psychedelic Mind, a 10 week course starting Jan 2026 with Dr. Chris Timmermann. This immersive online course dives into the therapeutic effects of psychedelics, the intersection between psychedelics and meditation, and their role in unlocking creativity and flow states. If you enjoy this talk you'll love this deep dive!
